Diabetes affects 1 in 11 adults worldwide. That’s 463 million people!
In the MENA region, 55 million people are affected. This number is to almost double and rise to 108 million by 2045. 15.4% of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes in the UAE.
These numbers, shared by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), are alarming. It’s therefore not surprising that the IDF aims to increase public awareness and promote high quality information about diabetes. At the same time, it provides education for people with diabetes and their healthcare providers.
Our interview with Pam Durant from Diapoint
It’s been our pleasure to discuss diabetes in the workplace with Pam Durant, Founder and Managing Director of Diapoint. Her son was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 20 months old. The news of his condition led Pam through a steep learning curve about the disease. She soon recognised that her new knowledge could potentially help thousands of others navigate the fear and confusion of the diagnosis.
The serious condition is certainly a challenge for individuals as well as employers.
As an expert in providing information and support for people with diabetes and their families, we’ve asked Pam about the different options companies can pursue to help their employees in learning about and preventing diabetes and also potential save money.
We know there is a difference between type 1, which affects children and where we don’t know what causes it, and type 2. Known as adult-onset diabetes, we are now seeing more children diagnosed with type 2 . The Mayo Clinic suggests that this may be due to the increase in childhood obesity. In this region, obesity and diabetes are amongst the top 4 health concerns for years. This obviously impacts the individual but also employers, since they pay the premium for the medical insurance. How can companies help their employees? And potential save money, tooo?
